Gang rape of 11 year-old girl paints victim as perpetrator

Earlier this month, The New York Times reported the story of the gang rape of an 11 year-old girl in Cleveland, Texas. According to the report, 18 males --- teenagers and grown men --- assaulted the child shortly after Thanksgiving. The suspects were just rounded up last month, after one of the girl's classmates shared some of the shocking footage of the crime with a teacher. While this crime is unspeakable, the response of some of the townspeople to the rape is unfathomable. Some of the sources in the story are quoted as saying the child wore makeup and clothes that were inappropriate for her age. It's this type of double victimization -- painting the victim as the criminal -- that perpetuates this type of crime, and it must stop.
